Interesting read recently in the San Francisco Chronicle about a large-scale residential development that was just completed adjacent to the MacArthur BART station in Oakland. I found the reference to BART’s recent “philosophical shift” concerning the propensity for allowing high density residential development illuminating, particularly given the ever-intensifying focus on finding sustainable housing solutions in the Bay Area.
This philosophical shift, combined with legislative efforts in the pipeline, including the controversial SB 50, will ultimately shape development around transit stations in the Bay Area for the foreseeable future.
Given the real life and political considerations at play, it is hard to envision that this type of high density residential development will not become commonplace adjacent to all relevant transit stations.
